A Hull company that manufactures and supplies lifting equipment has gained essential accreditations to win work in the renewables sector.

Winch Systems, a family run business established in 1998 by Neil and Julie Giblin, recognised opportunities in the offshore wind industry, as well as the need for ISO accreditations to maintain their place in the market and to win further contracts.

Using advice and funding acquired through the Green Port Growth Programme (GPGP), which is supported by the Regional Growth Fund, Winch Systems gained ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHAS 18001 in 2015.

Managing Director Neil explains:

“As our equipment ranges from 50kg pull to 40,000kg, we work across all types of industries. We have a strong presence within the overhead line sector having completed work for companies such as National Grid, Scottish & Southern Energy, and many other large utilities firms. With our experience and expertise, we knew we could access work in renewables – we just needed to achieve some accreditations first to put us in a stronger position.

“In addition to our ISO achievements, our sister company, Slingtak Hoists, has now relocated to Hull from Cleckheaton, giving it the opportunity to supply, test and repair lifting gear used within the installation and maintenance of offshore wind farms.”

The ongoing development and growth of both companies means further recruitment is needed including looking to fill a sales/dispatch administrator post.

Project manager for GPGP’s business support team, Dawn Hall, said:

“Winch Systems is a perfect example of the sort of businesses we are working with – companies that are established and have an excellent reputation, but simply need some guidance in order to make themselves accessible to the renewables sector. We’re delighted Winch Systems has gained all the relevant accreditation and look forward to seeing what new projects come its way.”
